Jesus followers committed to living holistically
Last month I went to a friend’s wedding. As part of the preparation, I had my hands and feet painted with henna. My friends loved the design, and were thrilled that I was participating in this part of their culture. But far beyond the cultural aspect of painting my hands was the spiritual effect. For two weeks, every time I adjusted my glasses, touched my bangs or even just moved my hands in everyday activity, my eyes were inevitably drawn to the flowers on the palms of my hands. And as my eyes were drawn to my palms, Isaiah 49:16 would come to mind, and I began to understand in a fresh way what God was saying to Israel – and what He says to us, His children, today.
Israel was in trouble. They thought that God had forgotten and abandoned them. To show Israel He could never forget them, He said “See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands (Isaiah 49:16).” Just as my eyes were constantly drawn to the palms of my hands throughout the day, reminding me of my friend and her wedding… so also God remembers us and thinks of us. God’s character does not change. When I am lonely, discouraged, afraid, uncertain or just too tired to stand, I can rest assured that He holds me in the palm of His hands. Thankfully, God’s inscriptions don’t fade, and His presence is constant. May we daily put our trust in the One who treasures us so much that He has inscribed our names on the palms of His hands.
